The Old 300 Homestead was established by the Brown Family in 1903. The Browns trace their roots back to the original 300 families who settled Texas in 1819, answering the call to civilize the wilds of northern Mexico, in what became known as the Austin Colony in the soon to be Republic of Texas.. Stephen F. Austin as governor of this colony, needed a surveyor. Bartlett Simms left his home in Tennessee in his early 20's, and took the job as surveyor in exchange for a league of land (4,428 acres), in what would now be downtown Austin in modern day Texas. After founding the Texas Rangers, and becoming a renowned Indian Fighter, Bartlett Simms sold his acreage and moved to Bastrop. In Bastrop, his daughter Emily married James Brown in 1868. Their son James Bartlett Brown moved with his parents Emily and James to Pioneer in 1903 and grew cotton and peanuts at this 900 acre Homestead. The original colonists are termed "Old 300", hence the name of this geocache.
