Geocache Description:

A beautiful 13th-century church dedicated to St Colanus, Colan became a Grade I listed building in 1967. Hidden between St Columb Major and Newquay and sitting on the banks of Ryalton Stream in remote surroundings and in an area rich in wildlife, the parish is in the rural deanery of Pydar.

There's a whole website dedicated to this church - follow the related link on this page for that.

IMPORTANT: This church micro requires you to enter the church to get some answers for questions. The Vicar keeps the church unlocked to provide shelter for local homeless - therefore please do not visit this cache late at night. (The Church is now being locked regularly, so if you can't get inside answers are below. Until I can amend the listing in more detail)

Headline co-ordinates are for a small wooden gate you should find a short way from the included parking co-ordinates. Enter the church yard via this gate and walk along the path towards the church.

Under a bush on right, ground level, is a small plaque;

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
DAPHNE JEAN McGUIGAN
DIED TRAGICALLY IN CANADA
14 MARCH A99B
AGED 6C RIP

Carry on up the path and through the gate into the church. Walk up through the pews and to the front of the church. To the left is a dedication to Reverend Gurney and his Granddaughter. D = the number of letters in each of their christian names (first name only) added together.

To the right is the Cosworth brass of which two legends exist. The first is that a Cromwell sympathiser shot at the brass, the second (and the one I'm more inclined to believe!) is that a rejected suitor shot at his love as she was being married to someone else! If that happened at the ceremony imagine what the reception was like! E = the number of bullet holes you can see here.

Now head back out towards the organ, on your right you will see a pair of stained glass windows each one containing a pair of red circles. F = the number of blue/green blocks either side of the circles (both windows) also note the date the church was restored 1GG4

Since the Chuch is now being locked at certain times, if you can't get inside the inside bits are as follows;

D=9
E=1
F=24
G=8

Leave the church (but before you do please consider donating and/or leaving something in the food bank and signing the visitors book) by the main entrance and turn to face the doors. To your right is the remains of Colan Cross, look for the plaque. H = the number of times the letter "E" features, I = the number of times the letter "L" does.

Continue along the brick path and when the path turns to the left carry straight on over the grass towards a wooden gate. To your right is a large cross with a low rusty fence around it. J = the number of uprights on the low fence. To your left is another cross "In Loving Memory of Gladys Ruth Ralph" who died aged KL.

Walk back to the path and carry on up to the top right hand corner of the cemetery, here you should find twin markers for two sisters - M = how many years Edna was born before Alice.

Walk along the top edge of the grass towards the other corner. Here you will find a memorial to a true Cornishman and his Wife. N = how many times the number two (2) appears in their dates.

You should now be able to work out the final co-ordinates, why not take a seat on one of the benches, enjoy the peace and work out some numbers! The cache is hidden at;

N50 2(A+B+C).(D)(E)(F-(G*2)) W004 5(H-I).(J-(K/L))(M)(N)

Once you have your answer you should be able to walk down the edge of the grass area to the a pair of wooden gates to the parking. The cache is located a short walk away.
