Shotokan Black Belt - Kihon Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

KowaiBaz: A visit to this one was necessary after the previous two logs by Fjon and medic143 mention syringes around GZ. The location has indeed changed and has the appearance of a regularly used spot for activities that do not go well with our pastime of rummaging for hidden containers. Unfortunately, there are no suitable (clean and/or safe) hiding spots within a reasonable distance of the original coords, so I'm letting it go. Thanks to all the visitors for the logs.

Geocache Description:

Your Shotokan Karate Black Belt test is in three parts: Kihon, or basic techniques (a traditional hide), Kata, or practice sequences (a multi-stage cache), and Kumite, or fighting (you can expect some surprises here, hence a mystery cache). If you pass all three parts, you will gain the satisfaction of knowing that you have become a "master of basics".

The Shotokan style is a simple one that does not employ a wide variety of motions or stances. It is recognisable by its linear, direct punching, striking, blocking and kicking from low stances.
You have practiced these basic techniques many, many times, and will now demonstrate that you have become a "master of basics".

Location
At the cache location, you will be standing on what once was the bank of the Grand Canal Main Line. This section of the canal was the original Main Line which ran from the City Basin and the Guinness Brewery as far as Suir Road Bridge. Here it was joined by the section of canal that traverses the south of the city to the River Liffey at Grand Canal Dock. This is now the (only) Main Line, but was formerly known as the Circular Line. The original Main Line has been filled in and now forms part of the route of the Luas tram.

From where you stand, you can observe the direct, economical and linear nature of these two modes of transport, reminiscent of the Shotokan style.

Not far west of here is the actual water of the canal, Suir Road Bridge and the Luas Bridge (Ann Devlin Bridge). It is worth taking a look at the impressive Main Line Lock #1, a double lock, which raises the water level about 5 metres.

The Cache
This is the geocaching equivalent of Shotokan kihonwaza (basic techniques). You are looking for a camouflaged micro container, placed above chest height: nothing fancy or unnecessary here. The cache contains a logbook only so BYOP.
