Murray Park was gifted to the people of Alford in 1936 by fellow villager, poet and civil engineer Charles Murray who was born in 1864 and died in 1941. His Doric verse below earned him an LLD for Aberdeen University, while his services as Secretary for Public Works, Union of South Africa (1910 - 1924), were recognised in the award by King George V of the CMG.
There's braver mountains ower the sea,
An' fairer haughs I've kent, but still
The vale o' Alford! Bennachie!
Yon is the howe an' this the hill!
Bennachie
