Geocache Description:

The name of this road has fascinated me for a while, so we developed a series of caches around the “monkeys” theme. The morning we were putting these out, I spoke to someone who knows one of the family and explained that it is said “Ahpays”, but they always gave them beans at school anyway!

William Apes was a native American Indian, ordained Methodist minister, writer and activist of the Pequot tribe. William Elisha Apes who ended up in NZ was either his son or much younger brother. He arrived on the Ajax, but mutinied and had the ship put into Port Otago where he loaded a whaleboat and deserted in 1838. The next mention is 1844 when he married Mana Punahere of Ngai Tahu and they had 6 or 7 children (again records are sketchy). There is a photo of their son giant James (Tiemi) Apes on:  http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/photograph/456/tiemi-apes-beside-a-whale-boat. William Apes is buried in Karitane.

Part of a series along Apes Rd. Gravel road, passable with a car with care. Places available to pull over near caches but take care on sharp bends. Lovely views along much of the road. Small container. GPS may be slighly out with tree cover.
