The rocks on Whiteside Pike are wonderfully layered, pocked, bent, and in places folded. Several outcrops occur and slightly different rocks show variations. They are part of the Bannisdale Formation - "Siltstone And Mudstone, Interbedded. Sedimentary Bedrock formed approximately 419 to 423 million years ago in the Silurian Period". The outcrop here has been slightly quarried as it has a usable slatey cleavage. Big 'leaves' of rock are at the cache site.
Directions: From the Bridge, head up the road to the farm. It's ok to go past the farm and reach the gate onto the fell. Head up the rough track a way before branching off to a gate through the fence. Continue across and up the hillside, skirt round the E side of a very boggy area, and reach a stone stile in the wall, NE of the cache.
The rock on this 'square' summit is interesting and the top gives a great view.
Onward to the Pike!
