Geocache Description:

This is a road side pullout with an Alberta History board commemorating the first Moravian settlement in Alberta.

The Moravians from Russia, seeking religious liberty in a land where there is no State Church, where the government granted full liberty of conscience to all creeds and where Moravians could freely found churches of there own, came to Canada in several parties in the spring and summer of 1894. They numbered over 225. They all came from Volhynia, but some of them had been born in Russian Poland.  Eventually some came from Poland direct. They all had some connection with the Moravian diaposa in the old country.

Coming to Alberta, the party divided. They did not all like the land reserved for them to the east of Fort Saskatchewan. Some preferred to buy their land from the Indian Department of Ottawa and so moved on to farms on the Papaschase Reserve near Edmonton. The rest took up free homesteads east and notheast of Fort Saskatchewan. These called their settlement Bruederheim and were the first Moravian congregation in Western Canada. Those near Edmonton called their community Bruederfeld.
