The Jinma Biji Archway金马碧鸡坊 (Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Archway) is a landmark of Kunming in Jinbi plaza. Here many stores offer handcrafts of various nationalities. Both are ideal souvenir venues.
The Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Memorial Arches are just two of them. They were built in the reign of Emperor Xuande in the Ming Dynasty, giving them a history of 400 years at present. The Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Memorial Arches have distinctive ethnic characteristics and are considered the symbol of Kunming.
One special feature of the Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Memorial Arches is that their shadows can overlap at a certain time under the golden afterglow of the sun and the silver light of the moon. This rare phenomenon forms a wondrous scene.
The Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Memorial Arches are twelve meters high and eighteen meters wide, with exquisitely carved beams and painted pillars.
North of it is the Nanping Business Street. The main thing for a tourist to know is that this is a lively walking street, no car traffic allowed. It is great for leisurely, low key "people watching."
It runs several blocks in between Dongfeng West Road 东风西路 and Jinbi Road 金碧路 near the center of downtown. It's a bustling commercial street with all sorts of shopping, from department stores like Carrefour to fine jewelry and boutique clothing stores. To the west of it is the Flower and Bird market where many interesting items are sold.
