The Hillside Dams, once the principle source of Bulawayo’s water supply, are in easy reach of the town centre.
Although distinct from the Matopo Hills, this area of broken kopjes and sandy open plains resembles the much larger, better-known World Heritage Site. Its natural vegetation is still largely intact, granite outcrops and indigenous woodland surround two dams in the middle of the residential suburb of Hillside. This natural area is a protected game and bird sanctuary with walking trails, and many quiet places tucked away from the city and its suburbs. Looking up at the sky above, you will often be gifted with the sight or hear the haunting cry of our favorite “fisherman”, the African fish eagle.
The area has attracted people since the earliest of times. It is not surprising that it was the location of one of King Lobengula Khumalo’s favourite royal villages to which he escaped when the stresses and strains of power at the nearby capital of koBulawayo were too great. More recently it has catered for generations of Bulawayo residents seeking an accessible place of peace, refuge and relaxation.
