According to Robert Julyan, in The Place Names of New Mexico, Lucy was settled by homesteaders around 1905. It had a post office as Lucia from 1908-1914, and as Lucy from 1914-1942. During its heyday, Lucy was "a thriving community, with a high school, church, stores, and a PO, but the Dust Bowl and the Depression began a decline from which Lucy never recovered." Lucy was the original location of the Cline's Corners Trading Post as well, though Cline moved it to the Rt. 66 location later to take advantage of the greater business opportunity there.
