Here There Be Dragons
In the days of old maps were hand drawn by cartographers. Many of these cartographers were also adventurers and explorers. Much of the information on their maps was gleaned from personal exploration and copied from other maps drawn by other explorers. The maps were like works of art, richly decorated and illuminated with bright colors and sometimes fanciful creatures that depicted the area being drawn.
In the early days of mapmaking, there were often areas of the unknown that bordered the mapped areas. No cartographer was willing to just say, "I don't know what is there". These areas were often unknown because of dangers in the area that took the lives of explorers who went there. This became the start of placing dragons and other mythical creatures in these area of the map with the caption "Here There Be Dragons"
