Situated in the Kaimanawa Forest Park, the Boyd Hut is below the Boyd Rocks and looks out towards the Ngaruroro River
Placement of this cache was done on a day tramp from the Tussock Hut while I was there for Richard's 50th Birthday party.
This Department of Conservation hut is a standard category 2, that requires 2 hut tickets to stay overnight.
You cannot drive to this cache, though it is possible to fly, and is best suited to reasonably fit and experienced trampers. Make sure you are suitably equipped for the conditions found in New Zealand’s bush country.
Various access points are available to reach this popular hunting and tramping area. From Taupo, travel 27 km east along State Highway 5 (Napier-Taupo Road) and turn right into Taharua Road.
No mountain bike access is permitted through Poronui Station
Option 1 – Taharua Roadend – Poled Route(3-4 hrs to Oamaru Hut, 6-7 hrs to Boyd Hut, and then return same way.
Drive 19 km along Taharua road to the end (5 km of gravel). A public carpark is available near the gates of Poronui Station and Heli Sika. This foot access only starts along a poled route through the private land of Poronui Station.
Option 2 – Helicopter (15 mins!)
Drive 19 km along Taharua road to the end (5 km of gravel) and talk to the boys at Helisika for a short, expensive, but exciting ride by helicopter to the Boyd Hut landing pad. Get a group of people together to share the cost.
