Milestones are a fascinating reminder of our wayside past, sitting quietly by the highway - loads on the Milestone Society's website, www.milestonesociety.co.uk This one has an even more unloved rusty electrical junction box as its companion.
Imagine driving a wagon up or down this steep hill, with no real brakes, when it was 'turnpiked' in 1780!! Milestones come in many shapes and sizes - you can see loads mapped on Google Earth if you access the Milestone Society's website, www.milestonesociety.co.uk or on flipflopnick's bookmarks list. This one was part of a contract for 200, manufactured at Brayshaw & Booth's Liversedge foundry in the 1890s. for the new West Riding County Council, although it's now looking tatty and unloved by Calderdale. You can see the remains of the original blue paint on its border, as you reach for the cache, but beware nettles in summer. Fortunately the electrical junction box (even more unloved) keeps it company...
The container has space for small trackables.
