Formation Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

petan: I am so annoyed! I'm spitting chips and I could easily unleash a torrent of four letter words at the b*stards who have filled in one of the few remaining pieces of the former South Coast rail line south of Nerang I original condition. The whole site has now been fenced and barricaded off and that little piece of railway earthworks are no more.

We were able to retrieve the container and will hopefully find another location where we can show former railway formation.

I'm sorry to all those who use this for D/T challenges, hopefully wherever we find will can have the same rating.

Geocache Description:

Formation is part of a series based on interesting rail and other transportation sites uncovered in our research on the old Gold Coast

The original steam train era South Coast (aka Gold Coast) railway line was via the inland route from Ernest Junction (between Helensvale and Molendinar) and Tweed Heads. The line opened in 1903 and closed in 1961. It featured many twists and turns and while locals often bemoan its passing, the fact remains that the line as it was would have made a slow trip for our modern electric trains.

Between construction of the M1 Motorway and new Gold Coast train line, as well as residential development in the area, there is very little of the old ‘formation’ still in existence. However, we found this remnant untouched- except by the “hands” of mother nature.  As you walk towards the cache site you will notice a shallow cutting to your left.  If you journey down into the shallow cutting you’ll see the remains of the ballast used to stabilize the original tracks. Railway ballast is usually considered to be larger sized rock than that used in road construction.

The cache is a regular sized sistema. Finding the correct way in will be a bit of a challenge. There are a few ‘natural’ trails in this area. If you come to the start of a wire fence and old railway fence posts, then you have come too far. Please do not attempt this at night.
