Geocache Description:

This cache is not at the published coordinates, but is a short walk away. To find the cache you must find the ten numbers which have been substituted by letters in brackets in the information below. The answers can be found on Priory related websites and, while not wholly necessary, one answer can be found by visiting the building itself and looking at the structure at the published coordinates. If you would like to post any pictures of yourself at the Priory that would also be great.

St Osyth's Priory was originally a house of Augustinian canons and was founded by Richard de Belmeis, Bishop of London circa 1(G-3)21.

It became one of the largest monasteries in Essex and was dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, as well as St Osyth. The first prior of St Osyth's was William de Corbeil who was elected Archbishop of Canterbury in 112(A-1).

The monastery was dissolved in 1(B-2)39 by King Henry (H). In the reign of King Edward (D) the abbey and it's estates were sold to Sir Thomas Darcy for just under £4(F)0.

The most significant remnant of the original monastic structures which is still standing is the gatehouse which dates from the late 1(I+1)th century.

Legend has it that St Osyth was a young lady who was involved in many fantastical events during her life. She was beheaded and where she fell a spring issued forth from the ground. She picked up her head and walked to the door of the nunnery where she knocked (J) times before collapsing.

The Priory is currently owned by the Sargeant family who purchased it in September 199(C+2)

Taking each opening as one, there are (D+2) window openings around the door in the gatehouse in most pictures of the Priory.

In terms of average rainfall, St Osyth is the driest recorded place in the UK with an average of just 5(E)3mm a year.

You are looking for a small clip top box in a camo bag.
