Geocache Description:

Nippy's Waikerie Producers (formerly Waikerie Cooperative Producers Limited)

The Waikerie Co-op was founded in 1914 when twenty four growers took out shares.  By 1917 the income from packing was £158, from the sale of merchandise £82, the total profit was £12, and the total assets were worth £1,300. These steadily increased to £40,000 in 1939, £147,000 in 1953 and £418,000 in 1963.
When the company started packing citrus in 1924 barely 200 cases were handled but in 1963 the total had increased to 303,000 cases. In 1968 the Waikerie shed handled some 600,000 cases of citrus and the 1970 total “was expected to about 1½ million cases. By 1972 this was expected to rise to between 2 and 2½ million. It was claimed that in 1970, 50% of Waikerie’s income came from citrus and that 37% of the State’s plantings were in the Waikerie area. The Waikerie Co-op had become the largest citrus co-operative in Australia.
By the 1980’s the environment for fruit co-operatives had stagnated to a point where Riverland co-ops either had to merge or close.  Waikerie Co-op managed to operate as its own entity for a number of years.
It is now a privately owned company as part of the Knispel family group of companies under the banner of Nippy’s Waikerie Producers dealing mainly in citrus fruit and juices. Some fresh fruit and stone fruit is packed on the growers behalf when in season.
Approximately 20,000 to 30,000 tonnes of citrus are handled annually and the season extends for 12 months of the year.
Depending on quality and demand, 50-80% of fruit is sized and sorted for packing, which is destined for Export and Domestic sales. Citrus is exported to the USA, UK, South East Asia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Japan.
The fruit is sourced from local and Riverland fruit-growers who deliver to convenient depots or directly to the Waikerie plant. As well, Nippy's owns and manages approx. 600 acres of its own orchards.
There is good off-road parking near the cache so that you can pull up easily away from passing traffic.
The volume of traffic both vehicular and pedestrian can vary, so be on the look out. The area has been cleared and cleaned to allow parking and viewing of the new Waikerie Silo Art

Cache has been replaced after a number of times disappearing and is now a magnetic mint tin located approx 10 metres N/E from original GZ.
