Easter Bonnets were a European tradition. Their history goes back farther than many of us realize. The first bonnets, usually a circle of leaves and flowers, symbolized the cycle of the seasons and the coming of Spring.
The 1870’s marked the beginning of the Easter Parade in New York. The Easter Parade allowed women to proudly show off their new spring clothing and Easter Bonnets. The very first Easter Bonnet Competition was presented in 1987 by the cast of La Cage Aux Folles at the Palace Theater and raised $21,000 for the National AIDS Network. In 1988, the event was produced as a benefit for BC/EFA and raised $51,000.
Today’s Easter Parade won’t raise anything for charity, but is designed for every geocacher to celebrate a new season of caching. Bring your special Easter Bonnet/Hat and join in fun. Make this parade one to remember!
