This lovely spot can be reached from east or west, see Out Scar Rock Oven for a map. It's a steeper climb from the west, as although the road isn't very far away, there is nowhere to park. It is, however, a nice walk up from Bampton, via the other caches on Knipescar, and on return you could celebrate success in the tea shop or pub. If you pick a nice day - bring a picnic as the common is a great place to sit and enjoy the great views. When the gorse is in flower, the smell of coconut fills the air.
To the west is Hawswater reservoir, helping quench a thirsty Manchester. Beyond are the high fells of the eastern Lakes, including the High Street ridge running north-south. To the north Blencathra (or Saddleback) stands out clearly to the left of the wood. On the corner/top of the scar is On The Edge.
This cache is near to an old lime kiln or 'rock oven'. This is a smaller kiln producing lime for the nearby farms. It's in a rather poor state now unfortunately, but still worth a look. Compare and contrast with the grander version on Out Scar. The hillside here is stepped by the beds of limestone, and several have been quarried for the kiln. Various layers can be seen with different characteristics, a result of changing environmental conditions in the warm shallow seas where the limestone was laid down.
A bit of clambering about will be needed to reach the cache, but it's fairly simple. Be gentle on the beautiful moss covered steps below - they make a very comfy seat on a warm day!
We hope you enjoy your visit to this beautiful place.
