TRUMAN HEIGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD
The neighborhood of Truman Heights is a visible remainder of a small township that grew in the late 1940s and is named after President Harry S. Truman, who served in the White House from April, 1945 to January, 1953. The small community of Truman, which had its own song written to commemorate its development, was short-lived, though, as the residents lost their zeal for Mr. Truman’s administration – perhaps after the firing of General Douglas MacArthur – and set out to vote for renaming themselves after the military hero. The 1951 vote failed, however, and 80-precent of its residents petitioned Mesquite to annex the area. The move successful and Truman, Texas was no more. Today, Truman Heights consists of Hillview and Stephenson Streets.
