A 7km hike (14km return) up to Craddock Pass. Fitness is very important since you will climb to an altitude of almost 1000m.
The starting point for this hike starts at the Witfontein Forest Station. Parking is available in front of the office. The trail is slightly overgrown near the railway tracks, but not too bad. It’s only the last few meters before the rail track and then the first few meters on the other side that is overgrown. We still managed easily to stay on track. The views on this route is really beautiful and worth the hike.
On the day of cache placement we decided to continue with this track over the mountain, instead of turning back from where we planted the cache. We reached the gravel road to Herold on the other side and walked back in the direction of George only to where we could hop back onto the rail tracks that runs next to the road at one point. We then continued on the tracks and through a few dark train tunnels till we reached the turn off point where we came up the mountain. This makes the hike a total of about 18km and a full day of hiking!
Directions to Witfontein: From the Traffic Circle in Heatherpark in front of the Engen filling station, exit towards Oudshoorn on the N9/N12. Drive about 800 m then turn right onto the Montagu Pass road. The road makes a left turn and becomes a gravel road. From here it is 400 m to the turnoff to the right for the Witfontein Offices.
