[ITA] Monsignor Giuseppe Faè e la sorella Giovanna sono state due persone molto importanti per la comunità di Montaner nel tempi difficili della Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
[ENG] Monsignor Giuseppe Faè and his sister Giovanna have been a very important presence in the community of Montaner during the hard times of WWII.
[ITA] Nato nel 1885 e ordinato sacerdote nel 1908, don Giuseppe Faè partecipò alla prima guerra mondiale come cappellano militare degli Alpini e divenne parroco di Montaner nel 1927, esiliato nel piccolo paese probabilmente per le sue idee dichiaratamente antifasciste.
Dopo l'armistizio dell'8 settembre 1943, con il nome di battaglia "don Galera" collaborò attivamente nella formazione delle prime bande partigiane del Vittoriese fornendo ai partigiani e a soldati alleati in fuga cibo, vestiti e sistemazione nella canonica.
Il 27 marzo 1944, su delazione di due spie, venne arrestato insieme alla sorella e ad altri paesani per attività antifascista; portati alle carceri di Udine, vennero processati e condannati a morte: la sorella del sacerdote venne inviata ad Auschwitz, senza fare più ritorno, mentre per intercessione della Curia don Giuseppe venne scarcerato a patto di rimanere confinato nel seminario di Vittorio Veneto fino alla fine delle ostilità.
Rientrato a Montaner nel maggio del 1945, don Giuseppe rimase a capo della parrocchia fino alla sua morte, avvenuta nel 1966.
[ENG] Born in 1885 and appointed as a priest in 1908, Father Giuseppe Faè took part to WWI as chaplain of the Alpine troops and became pastor of Montaner in 1927, exiled in the small village probably for his openly antifascist ideas.
After the armistice of September 8th, 1943, he actively collaborated to the formation of the first partisan bands around Vittorio Veneto with the nom de guerre "don Galera" (Father Jail), and provided food, clothing and accommodation in the rectory to the young men and Allied soldiers fleeding to the mountains.
On March 27th, 1944, after delation by two spies, he was arrested for anti-fascist activities along with his sister and other villagers; brought to jail in Udine, they were tried and sentenced to death: the sister was then sent to Auschwitz, without coming back at the end of the war, while after the interposition of the religious hierarchy Father Joseph was released from prison on the condition of being confined in the Vittorio Veneto seminary until the end of the war.
Back in Montaner in May 1945, Father Joseph was in charge of the parish until his death in 1966.
