Geocache Description:

A nice hike in to explore a geologically fascinating area. The miners were extracting mercury and uranium from the hills up until the early 1960's. The Bear Creek area rock is material from the base of the Clarno Formation deposited during the Eocene. The rock is a very interesting mixture of andesites, basalts and rhyolites. Do not access the site via the road as it crosses private lands. From the parking location follow your gps around the private land fence to the north.

The road that miners used to access this site crosses private land...DO NOT Trespass! Hiking in from the parking coordinates will keep you on public land. Private land begins just north of the parking spot. Cross through the fence at the old gate and stay south of the metal poled fence to the north. If you follow this fence for a ways it will wrap around a tree and head north where it is public land beyond there.
The cache is located on a small knob above the first mine shaft. Enter the shaft at your own risk. Continue up the road to the north about .25 miles you where you find a spring. Just to the right of the spring you will see where they processed the ore through a mercury retort. Please take only photos so others can see the remains. There are many areas on the ridge to the east of the retort to explore...some are very dangerous so use caution.
