The name "Goolwa" means "elbow" in Ngarrindjeri, the local Aboriginal language.
Built on the final bend of the River Murray, Goolwa is a natural port for shipping on the river. In 1830 Captain Charles Sturt completed his historic journey down the Murray River and advised that a settlement should be established near the mouth of the river so the inland could be opened up. The town of Goolwa was surveyed as early as 1840. Goolwa was Australia's first inland port and in 1853 Australia's first railway was built to connect Goolwa to Port Elliot, allowing goods to move from river boats to sea boats, so that neither had to negotiate the Murray Mouth.
The geocache is located on a display at the entrance to Goolwa. The two town displays celebrate the paddle steamers built for shipping on the river, both sternwheelers and sidewheelers. This is the sidewheeler display. Good hunting.
