A cache to mark Kennington's "Pullens Estate", a wonderfully preserved example of Victorian "live/work" flats and workshops - as seen in the Oscar winning "Kings Speech"
The Pullens Estate, one of the London's last known surviving victorian tenemant buildings, were built by James Pullen over a 15 year period from 1886. The full estate, which originally extended southwards as far as Manor Place, comprised 684 dwellings in 12 blocks. Attached to the rear of the dwellings, arranged round four yards, were 106 workshops. The estate’s shops were located at the entrances to the workshopyards.
Some of the buildings were damaged during German bombing in World War II. Others were demolished when they fell into disrepair. A V1 demolished six houses in Crampton Street and four in Manor Place as well as damaging a public wash house and stores in Manor Place, a railway bridge, two arches, and 300 houses and buildings in Manor Place and surrounding streets. Of the original four Pullens Yards, the Clements Yard, Iliffe Yard and Peacock Yard still remain. They are still in use and house a variety of workers including potters, a lute maker, architects, dressmakers and jewellery designers.
The yards are open to the public twice yearly to promote the independent traders. The site was used in the 2010 film "The Kings Speech", and the surrounding streets were dressed in a 1936 style to depict Lionel Logue's Kensington home.
THE CACHE ! - is a wallmounted keysafe box - you'll need an 3 digit code - which is the number painted on the fan-light above the FRONT door of the building on which the cache is hidden. Please ensure the lockpad is "cleared" and the cover replaced when leaving the cache ! PLEASE NOTE - Cache is only available during the day (7 days a week though) - the yard where the cache is located is locked from around 5-6pm every weekday and 4-5pm every Saturday/Sunday.
NOTE - 11th November 2013.
For a number of people who have shown concern in the logs - there is ABSOLUTLEY no affiliation with the cafe nearby - they are well aware of the cache, and keep an eye on it for me - but there is NO obligation to do anything other than find the cache there - the cafe owner and her staff are friendly and support geocaching - there is nothing commercial to gain here !. And for anyone un-educated (!) - a "fan light" - is a window above a door....... (!)
On a personal note - its been a while since i've hidden a cache - i won't be doing many, but since this is near my new home, I thought this would be appropriate - for anyone interested in the demise of some of my older cache's, please see here: (visit link)
