Ladies Tarn is a glacial lake situated at 980m within the Hartz Mountain National Park. The park was included in Tasmania's Wilderness World Heritage Area in 1989, in recognition of its spectacular natural and cultural values.
Ladies Tarn is passed on the walk up to Hartz Pass and the highest point of the Hartz Range, Hartz Peak (1255 m). Walking this track provides panoramic views into the heart of the southwest. Looking north reveals the back of the Wellington Range and looking east has views from Cygnet to Bruny Island, Acteon Island and Cockle Creek.
From the visitor registration hut, it's less than a two hour return walk including a short morning tea and photo stop. Around half of that section of the track is boardwalk, so it's not difficult walking, but can be a little bit muddy in spots and also very busy on nice days. This is a great walk for children and people of most fitness levels. There were 17 cars in the carpark at lunchtime the day we placed this cache!
Due to this being a high altitude walk the usual warnings apply. The Hartz Mountains experience typical south-west weather conditions. This can be a wild, inhospitable and isolated place. Rain falls on more than 220 days of the year so it is necessary to carry waterproofs and warm clothing with you at all times. In all seasons there can be snow, high rainfall, extremes of temperature, strong winds and sudden weather changes, which can provide a dramatic contrast to conditions in the forested lowlands you have just passed through.
