After the second world war, many of the Polish who had been living in Britain returned home in safety. But some like General Maczek chose to stay in Scotland. The Barony Hotel which had been an Army Headquarters and Staff College, was bought by one of his soldiers, Jan Tomasik. Together they decided to create a great map of Scotland as a tribute to the hospitality of the people and the connections between the Poles and the Scots.
The map was built over a few weeks in 1975. It was sadly neglected over the following years, but a group of volunteers is busy raising funds to restore the map to its former glory. There will be water all around the map, with rivers and lochs fed from underground pipes, supplied from the burn further up stream.
Visitors are welcome at the hotel and grounds. They have asked that visitors use the additional car parking spaces nearest the gates. There is no lighting so they do not want people going to the map at night. Dogs are allowed on the grounds. Mrs HGKF and I enjoyed a lovely cup of tea and freshly baked scones the day we placed the cache.
Cache placed with the kind permission of the Barony Castle Hotel.
