Geocache Description:

This is our first attempt at hiding a geocache.  It is not associated with others in this area (by Zola67).  It is a simple find, ideal for famillies.  Container is in keeping with the natural surroundings...

The beautiful Fowleys Falls, on the Glenaniff river, are a series of waterfalls ranging in height from 1 to 5m. The falls are spectacular and noisy in winter when the river is spate and they are serene on a warm summers day.

The famous Gilaroo is an unusual variety of trout which spawns in the Glenaniff river, upstream from Lough Melvin. They grow quite large and can be spotted by the eagle eyed in the lower reaches of the river during spawning season. [PLEASE do not disturb them if spotted]. Gilaroo is derived from the Irish for Red Fellow (Giolla Rua). This is due to the distinctive golden coloured flanks. The fish is unusual because it has a gizzard akin to a turkey or goose. It feeds on the bottom of the lake on snails and sedge fly larva and grows to the size of a salmon. Although found in other lakes in Ireland, the particular gene found in the Lough Melvin Gilaroo has, so far, not been discovered in multiple samples taken in Britain and Ireland.

Legend has it that Saint Brigid (you can see many St. Brigid's crosses, made from reeds or rushes on 1st February, hanging in Irish homes) was offered chicken to eat on a Friday in nearby Garrison. Because of her strict Catholic faith, she flung the entire bird into the lake where upon it changed into a fish, and hence the gizzard!

Our small cache is dedicated to the late Teresa Regan who owned most of the land on which this pleasant walk is located. She encouraged all who showed an interest to use this walk, even before it was developed by the local Parish Priest.
