This Earth Cache brings you to the Cliffs of the Neuse State Park located near Seven Springs, NC along the banks of the Neuse River. The park's museum features exhibits about the geology and natural history of the cliffs and the park. You will definitely want to visit the museum.
The cliffs were formed when a fault in the Earth's crust shifted millions of years ago. The Neuse River followed this fault line and, over time, cut its course through layers of sediment deposited by shallow seas that had earlier covered the coastal plain. A portion of the river took a bend against its bank and the water's erosive action slowly carved the Cliffs of the Neuse.
Extending for 600 yards the series of cliffs rise 90 feet above the water and reveal exposed layers of sediment. Sediment you may observe include gravel (gray), shale (brown), sand (white), seashells (yellow) and clay (tan) which form a multicolored cliff face. Sediment grain is either coarse, intermediate or fine.

2- Describe the sediment grain at Ground Zero.
3- There is an overlook a few feet from Ground Zero which offers a great spot to view the sediment layers. Based on your observations from this vantage point and using the above information as a guideline, list the deposited sediments in the order they appear from top to bottom.
4-Although the cliffs rise 90 feet above the river, use your GPS device to determine the elevation at GZ.
5- Optional- Post a photo of you or your group at GZ.
