Geocache Description:

This is the second of a series of caches commemorating the industrial past of the Moss Vally

If you have come via the Flour Mill, the wide track on which you are walking is the route of the Penny Engine Railway, so called because although the line was built to haul goods, the engineer would allow locals to ride on the train for a penny.

The line was built in the late 1800s by local landowner Mr de Rhodes. It was to provide railway access to his ambitious Seldom Seen (Plumbley) Coal Mine. The line ran from the Eckington and Renishaw Midland Railway station to the Seldom Seen Mine. Traces of the line can be seen crossing Renishaw Park Golf Course and the route is commemorated in Eckington’s Penny Engine Lane. Unfortunately all of this led to de Rhodes bankruptcy in 1901
