Geocache Description:

Few coastal travellers get to enjoy the beauty of the Umkomaas valley. This cache will take you to the town of Umkomaas on the South Coast of KZN, then a little way inland to get a taste the valleys wonders. If you keep your eyes on the river, you may get to see the World War 2 Airplane, a Kitty Hawk that crashed into the river in 1944 and was never retrieved, the pilot remains where his steel bird fell.

The Umkomaas valley is mentioned in Alan Patons 1948 novel "Cry the Beloved Country". You may not have time to see this valley in detail. But when you go looking for this cache you will get to see a very old single bridge crossing the valley that serves as an important conduit for the local residents. The river itself is
298 Km long originating in the Drakensburg , the river basin covers m4315 Sq Kilometers. The 'Cloud Factory' was built in the late 1950's by an Italian consortium and is a major producer of Chemical Cellulose, used for making acetate and cellophane. You will find the cache hidden on the bridge itself. It's best to park before the bridge and walk across to search for your find. You will have time to look around between cars crossing as it's a single lane crossing and not a speedy one.
