Dieser Cache soll an ein lange zurückliegendes Kapitel der Geschichte Tunesiens erinnern. Wie vielen andere Völker im damaligen Osteuropa war ihnen ein Weiterleben in ihrer Heimat nicht mehr möglich, sie waren den ständigen berittenen Raubangriffen der westwärts ziehenden Hunnen nicht mehr gewachsen. Es setzte um das Jahr 400 eine gewaltige Völkerwanderung ein in Richtung der vom Limes umfriedeten Provinzen des Römischen Reiches. Doch die Römer wollten ihr Staatswesen nicht von den wilden Menschenmassen durcheinanderbringen lassen. So wanderten die Völker in den Grenzländern vor dem Limes Jahr für Jahr westwärts. Sechs Jahre später, am Silvestertag eines besonders harten Winters, gelang rund 100000 der mittlerweile sogenannten Wandalen über den zugefrorenen Rheinstrom der Durchbruch ins Römische Reich hinein. Weitere 3 Jahre später endete die Wanderschaft auf der spanischen Halbinsel, ganz einfach weil es dort nicht mehr weiterging.

Die katholische Urbevölkerung „Afrikcas“ wurde teils von Geiserich respektiert, teils unterdrückt und ausgeraubt. Die Hauptstadt Karthago (Tunis) und große Bestandteile der römischen Flotte fielen nach und nach an die Wandalen, durch die neu erlangte Seemacht wurde das Wandalische Königreich erweitert um die Inseln Sardinien, Korsika und die Balearischen Inseln. 455 gelang der große Dolchstich – die Plünderung der Hauptstadt Rom. Die Bevölkerung soll angeblich auf Bitten des Papstes geschont worden sein. Viele fähige Handwerker und die Tochter des Kaisers wurden aber mitgenommen ins heutige Tunesien. In den folgenden Jahren zerfiel das Römische Reich zunehmend. Am ungarischen Balaton war Geiserich als Kind einer Sklavin und eines Königs ohne Land auf die Welt gekommen. Einundsiebzig Jahre nach der berühmten Rheinüberquerung, die er als Kind miterlebt hatte, starb er als berühmter und mächtiger König. Sein eher unbeliebter und herrischer Königssohn Hunerich riss das Zepter an sich, indem er seine Brüder verbannte und es brachen weniger erfolgreiche Zeiten an.
Man erzählt, die schon damals für ihre Töpferkunst bekannte Stadt Neapolis (Nabeul) bekam vom Hunerich den Auftrag zur Fertigung einer besonders prachtvollen Grab-Urne für den verstorbenen König. Den Cache liegt in offener Landschaft, man kann ihn von 3 verschiedenen Seiten aus über befahrbare Wege erreichen, die letzten 200 m muss man aber laufen. ACHTUNG: den Strand des benachbarten Hotels dürfen leider nur noch Hotelgäste nutzen - das Hotel muß also nordöstlich umgangen werden.

Hunerich and the unsettled urn of Geiserich
