Geocache Description:

“The Hangman” is as the name suggest, and is a microcache accessible from the roadside (Stanford Lane) but it may be difficult to spot. It contains only a log sheet, so you will need to bring your own pen to sign the log, and a pair of tweezers may come in handy to retrieve the log sheet.. Please take care of traffic on the road if accompanied by children or dogs.

A series of 23 caches following a circular route from Stanford-on-Soar to Rempstone and back across the Hoton Hills. Terrain is fairly level with one steep incline (25 m height gain) from the King’s Brook to the Hoton Hills ridge. The trail is all on public bridleways and footpaths, Between caches #11, #12 and #13 you may will need to walk along the busy A60 road. However, this has a footpath set away from the road but please do take extra care if accompanied by children and/or dogs. Terrain is fairly level on most of the circuit, with one steep incline (25 m height gain) from the King’s Brook to the Hoton Hills ridge. The trail is all on public bridleways and footpaths,
“The Hangman” is a replacement for the original Stanford Stomp #1 cache, which we had to archive because it kept being lost. This is a completely new cache and hiding place, and is located near the start of the public footpath on Stanford Lane which runs alongside the King’s Brook and runs northeastwards to Rempstone. Please take care of traffic on the rodside, which can be narrow at the cache site on Stanford Lane.

PLEASE ENSURE THE GEOCACHE IS REPLACED CAREFULLY AND SECURELY IN EXACTLY THE SAME PLACE AND POSITION AS YOU FOUND IT AND OUT OF DIRECT VIEW (THANK YOU)

Limited space to pull in for parking alongside the road is available close to the geocache and in several places along the Stanford Lane road towards Cotes. Better parking is available about 250 m to the northwest by the church in the village Stanford-on-Soar.

The footpath on the Stamford Stomp trail will take you alongside the King’s Brook for just under half the circuit, before gently climbing up to Rempstone, and then back across the top of the Hoton Hills ridge to Stanford Lane. The trail will afford you fine views of Stanford Hall to the northwest, and to the south you will have a scenic vista across the Soar Valley and over Loughborough to the Charnwood Hills on the southern skyline. All of the caches on this trail are on public footpaths and public bridleways, with the exception of #23, which is located alongside a new permissive path and Stanford Lane on open access land. The total distance of the circuit is about 11 km, which will take between 2-2.5 hours (plus caching time). A wide variety of geocache containers and disguises have been used on the trail: some are very easy but some are designed to be challenging. We hope you enjoy the variety.

Many of the field margins are being managed to help conserve farmalnd and woodland wildlife under the Higher Stewardship Scheme. Please keep to the footpaths and keep dogs under control. Keep a look out for a large variety of birdlife, and if you are lucky you may even get a rare sighting of an otter along the King's Brook or along Stanford lane (we have)

In some of the geocaches you will find a secret code letter and number or you may need to record a number from a feature associated with some of the geocaches, which you will need in order to find the coordinates of the "Stanford Stomp Bonus Cache". Be sure to record these if you want to find the bonus cache.

You can also take in a few other nearby geocaches while doing this series: " Holy Cow" (GC2YWG9), Enigma Code (GC2YWGW), Rockers Cache 1 (GC1NTTD) and "Borderline" (GCMMPC).
