Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed as part of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s Centennial Geocaching Project “Caching in on our Legacy” celebrating the 100 anniversary of Girl Scouting in the USA.

Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low began Girl Scouting in Savannah Georgia on March 12, 1912. By 1918 Girl Scouting had arrived in St Louis and within a decade, in 1928, the First Congregational Church of Webster Groves sponsored Girl Scout Troop 1 in Webster Groves with Dorothy Peterson leading a large troop of 48 girls.
The First Congregational Church of Webster Groves was established in 1866 and by 1870 the congregation had grown enough to erect its first stone structure. The cache page photo is from 1876. Part of this stone church can be seen from Lockwood Avenue. The bell tower was erected in 1892-3 and the bell still rings from the steeple that is visible from the cache location. Near the cache location is a memorial garden that may be worth a few moments of your time.
The cache can best be accessed from the rear parking lot with the entrance off Gore Avenue, one half block south of Lockwood Ave. Please keep in mind that there may be church services or other events going on at the time you would like to seek the cache and you may choose to return later.
