Geocache Description:

Explore some Tucson history while following the 7 steps and fill in the answers to each to fill out the the digits to the final cache coordinates. The following sites are organized into two groups with the later 3 steps being closer to the final cache location.

The cache is a virtual cache and to verify your successful completion, please e-mail me at jscotti@pirl.lpl.arizona.edu with the answer to the following question: According to one of the signs at the final coordinates, when was "the earliest known occupation of Southern Arizona"?

The "Steps" below remain unchanged from the original version in case you started work on it while it had a microcache at the final site, but the final answers for the digits have some changes since the final location for the virtual cache is different from the original cache hiding location.

Step 1) Go to the initial coordinates for this cache. What year was this place established? ________

Step 2) Go to N32 15.620, W110 52.429. Major Girard served as surgeon at this post how many times? __

Step 3) At the same site as step 2, how many men served as post surgeon? ____

Step 4) Go to N32 15.638, W110 52.425. How many players are on the 4th Cavalry team pictured in the photograph? __

Step 5) Go to N32 13.356, W110 58.439. What year was the Spanish Presidio of San Agustin del Tucson founded? _______

Step 6) Go to N32 13.250, W110 58.316. What year did Charles O. Brown purchase this house? ________

Step 7) Go to N32 13.256, W110 58.395. This location is called La Placita which is short for La Placita de ______ ______________ .

Now, construct a conversion table of letters to numbers so that A=0, B=1,..., J=9, K=0,..., Z=5. (Use this only for the answer to "J" below.)

A= 2nd digit of Step 3.
A= ___

B= Step 4 minus first digit of Step 3.
B= ___

C= First digit of step 3 plus first digit of step 1 plus A.
C= ___

D= 3rd digit of Step 1.
D= ___

E= Step 4 minus D.
E= ___

F= D minus last digit of Step 5.
F= ___

G= 3rd digit of Step 5 minus H.
G= ___

H= C plus F.
H= ___

I= B minus step 2.
I= ___

J= Using the conversion table you made after Step 7, subtract the number corresponding to the first letter of the first word of the answer to Step 7 from the number corresponding to the second to last letter of the 2nd word of the answer to Step 7.
J= ___

The virtual cache will be found at N32 AB.CDE, W111 FG.HIJ - just plug in the numbers from above:

N32 __ __ . __ __ __ , W111 __ __ . __ __ __

To check your answers and keep you from heading to the wrong place, the sum of all the digits you enter above should add up to 30. (Don't include the degrees portion of the coordinates, the 32 or the 111, in the checksum.)

Good Luck!
