Behind the Cyprus Army camp of Aplanta.

Military service in the National Guard of the Republic of Cyprus is mandatory for males born of a Cypriot parent, members of the Greek Cypriot community. Its duration is 24 months. Until 2007, conscription was optional for members of the three religious groups, i.e. Armenians, Roman Catholics (the Latins), and Maronites. Members of the Turkish Cypriot community are not conscripted into the National Guard.

The obligatory service is usually 24 months, however it can be reduced accordingly, up to 3 months. Foreign nationals who acquire Cypriot citizenship are also conscripted, for a period of 14 months. All male residents of the island, or visitors who have a parent of Cypriot extraction, who are of military age (16 and over) are required to obtain an exit visa from a Defence Ministry office.

AGIA MAVRI
The official tradition of the church reports that St. Timotheos and St. Mavri came from Egypt. They were both children of righteous families. Timotheos daily fought against paganism through his fiery speeches. Because of such activity, he was arrested as a Christian only 20 days after his marriage to Mavra. They both refused to succumb to the horrible torments that the Ruler of Thivaeda, Arrianos, imposed on them and -in the end -died due to the torment of death by crucifixion that lasted 9 days.

It is not know how the adoration of the two Saints was transferred to Cyprus. Naturally, during the first Christian times there was a large movement of Christian populations because of the persecutions; Egypt and Cyprus were under Roman rule and had close ties.
