No.1 Ratby Burroughs Round - The Memorial Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

chev&ossie: Sadly, yet another of our caches has been sabotaged again. This is now costing us too much to keep replacing them, and taking too much of our time to keep checking them out, and looking for alternate hiding places to try to defeat our saboteurs. We feel we're left with no alternative now other than to archive caches as they go missing. What a shame for genuine cachers

Geocache Description:

After starting Geo-caching in 2011, we decided it would be nice if we shared one of our favourite walks with others by doing a circular walk around The Burroughs and Martinshaw Woods area in the village of Ratby, Leicestershire.
There is limited car parking on the main road through the village, or at the side of Burroughs Road, up the hill, near to a pub. Further parking will be described as the route expands.
We're hoping to make it an easy and fun geo-caching experience, as they're the ones that we enjoy the most, with a nice walk out.
There is wheelchair and pushchair access to caches 1 - 6, but assistance maybe required to obtain the cache.
There are 2 handy places for refreshments on route.

We would recommend wearing wellies if you're planning on going any further than caches 1-6. These 1st ones are on a tarmac track, but once off this, some of the route around does get very muddy, especially from just before No.7 through to No.10

The whole circular walk is approximately 4-4 1/2 miles round. It took us 2 hours to walk it, but that was in very slippery, wet conditions, as we timed it following a good snowfall and when it had started to melt. You should allow more time to take into account the time spent looking for the caches

Ratby school was built for the princely sum of £3,000 and opened in 1873. It has had several extensions over the subsequent years to cater for the ever expanding village population. School attendance was made compulsory here in 1874, and at the time it was one of only 2 schools in Leicestershire to attempt to enforce this byelaw. This caused a lot of local tension with parents who needed their children to work to help support their family.
In the centre of the village is a War Memorial, called The Angel of Peace. This was constructed  after World War 1 in 1920 and unveiled by the wartime Commander-in-Chief, Field Marshall Haig. It's one of the few memorials in the country to have a casualty's name from the current conflict in Afghanistan carved into it. Sadly, local lad Chris Gray, lost his life in 2007.

This is a magnetic nano, NOT in the area of the War Memorial. Discretion may be needed at school opening and closing times as the area does get very busy then.

If heading to 1A after this, you'll be needing the Public Footpath which can be located at N52 38.935 W001 14.882
Congrats to The Herds on their FTF.
