Geocache Description:

A beautiful little spot where we have only just discovered. This cache is accessable anytime.

Now on private land, this cemetery was once the general cemetery for Cudgegong township and surrounds. The site of the old town, all of its buildings removed or demolished, now lies beneath the waters of Lake Windamere, headwaters of a dam completed in 1984. The cemetery is well above water level but, although preserved from flooding, it has been subjected to mindless vandalism so that many of the beautiful old monuments and wrought iron enclosures are now badly damaged.

The earliest burial found commemorated was dated 1868 and the latest 1973. The site is within the Mid-Western Regional Council area but the council has no responsibility for it and hold no records. It is fenced but, when we visited it in the midst of a drought, the grass had been eaten out by kangaroos and that possibly contributed to the damage to be seen.

From Mudgee, take the Castlereagh Highway east for 34km. The cemetery turnoff, signposted but easily missed, is at the western end of a rest stop area on the northern side of the highway. From there, it is 1km along a dirt track that is very rough in parts.
