Geocache Description:

There are many things to see and do at this site so you find you will need to spend plenty of time looking around.

Please stick to the tracks and respect the environment and history that remains.

There is a track for 4 wheel drives but we have added some parking coordinates for 2 wheel vehicles with a 280 meter walk up to the GZ.

There are remains of a hut, seating where the miners would share a meal and you can still see the water runs and damming that was once used to control the water.

PLEASE be careful around the top of the rock face. There is a track leading to the hopper remains. Please stick to the tracks and ensure you do not take any short cuts as this is a mining area and can hide many old mining pit falls.

To successfully log this earth cache you must complete the following:

  1. Locate the quarry to the right of the track and explain the colour and structure of the soil/granite/sand. What do you see?

  1. Locate the drilling marks in the granite wall above the hopper remains to the left of the track and describe the process of drilling in such dense materials.

  1. Tin ore is exclusively in the form of?

  1. Production has come mainly from placer deposits in the northeast of the State, derived from primary deposits associated with what types granites?

  1. Cassiterite is normally disseminated throughout these granites but can be concentrated in lode deposits in late-stage magmatic bodies such as?

  1. To prove you visited the site please explain what man made items you can see protruding from the rock while standing at the bottom of the rock cutting?  What do you think these could have used for?

Please submit your answers to us prior to logging your find. Any logs that have not gained permission to log will be removed.

Optional-Take as many photos of the area to share with us.

One of the richest alluvial goldfields in Victoria. Opened in 1852, and not exhausted in 1856 when there were 6000 - 7000 persons digging between Reids Creek Falls and Sebastopol. The Woolshed township was 21/2 miles long. Many beautiful stones as well as gold occurred in the washed dirt, rock crystal, citrine, morion, amethyst, jasper, corundum, lydionite, agates, quartzites, diamonds, sapphire, topaz, garnet and zircon.

Still to this day you can find people searching for gold and precious stones. Most recently there have been reports of scores of gold while panning and some diamonds being found in these areas (licences required)
