One of the geocaches needed for the RiverRocks GeoTrail Challenge (GC3W6WC)!
This cache is over half-way up the vertical elevation on Lookout Mountain, but you will hardly notice it because the Guild-Hardy Trail was originally a broad-gauge railroad right-of-way, and therefore has gentle curves and a very gradual grade.
Park at the Guild-Hardy trailhead off of Ochs Highway in St Elmo, or at the Ruby Falls lower parking lot, and set out up the mountain. (If you park at the Guild-Hardy trailhead, you will go right by another of the caches in this series: GC3XDJY.)
When you reach a major Y in the trail (the site of a wye when this trail was a railway!), turn left and continue to follow the Guild-Hardy Trail. You will briefly pass through parts of the National Park System land, including a trail junction with the Rifle Pits Trail; that is the way up to Point Park and the Civil War history (and virtual caches!) there. But to find this cache, continue on the Guild-Hardy Trail. When you see a prominent sign on the left side of the trail indicating that you are now entering land owned and maintained by the Lookout Mountain Conservancy (and no longer on NPS land), you are very close to this cache!
It is on the uphill side of the trail, about 30' off of the trail, concealed by logs. (It is NOT in the recently-downed tree right by the trail.)
Container is a standard ammo can, stenciled with Geocaching logo, and a RiverRocks sticker.
CONGRATULATIONS TO TERRI2SOUTH AND SMOKE69 FOR FTF!
