The IQT was planned to be something for everyone. As such it spans easy and difficult terrain and includes easy and difficult caches. Cache sizes range from micro to ammo cans and may be hidden in sage brush, rocks, crevices and high or low. There are true power trail sections and there are sections where you'll spend some time looking but our hope is that you will find something you enjoy regardless of your caching preference.
Currently the IQT connects approximately 375 miles of back Idaho roads from the Oregon border at Weiser, ID to the Oregon border near Jordan Valley, Or. The trail is comprised of four sections, the IQT, the Top 100, the Idaho Challenge Series and the Owyhee Byways Trail. Trail elevations range from around 1000 feet to over 6000 feet and terrain ranges from desert to mountain and clay to sand. While Idaho only gets an average of 12 inches a year the road from Grand View to Jordan Valley can be very treacherous when it does rain. The road there is closed from the time snow flies at 6,000 feet to around April 15th. People have gotten stuck and had to wait until spring to get their cars extracted from the mud so best to honor the road closures in this area. The section between Boise and Mountain Home remains drivable most of the year but can be impassible in wet weather. The rest of the trail is weather dependant so it is always best to check the local weather forecasts to plan your trip. Typically late spring through early fall is a good time for most of the trail sections.
The League of Idaho Cachers is a group of over 30 cachers throughout Idaho and we all work together to place caches and maintain them. However, some areas are more prone to displacement than normal. We have found many critters love geocaching too and like to move containers. Sometimes they move them to their burrows or hide them where we can't find them. Cachers may want to take containers with them for obvious critter activity or where we have notated the cache for checking. We really take no pleasure in cachers missing finds.
We from the League wish you all the best. Have a safe adventure!
