Geocache Description:

Many New Zealand girls and women spent time at Arahina a historic house in Marton .

The Arahina training centre in Marton served as the national training centre for girl guides between 1946 and 1999. Prior to that it was the home of Alfred and Jean Crooke, who were responsible for the construction of the main house in 1919, and who resided in the house until the early 1940s.

Arahina is historically and culturally significant for its association with the Girl Guide movement in New Zealand.
At Arahina, thousands of guides and leaders were trained, and went on to provide leadership to generations of New Zealand girl guides. The Girl Guides Association has had a major impact on the lives of many young New Zealand women and this building had a big role in that history. Thousands of guides and leaders were trained at the centre and many went on to provide leadership to generations of New Zealand girl guides.
The large grounds have several buildings including a hut known as the BP hut named in honour of Lord Robert Baden Powell who started the scout and guide movements.  There is an outdoor chapel, woodland area and a stream runs through the property.
The area also has aesthetic and architectural value. The homestead is a fine example of the English Domestic Revival style, and is carefully detailed and well handled. The homestead is set among well-kept and carefully laid out gardens and outbuildings that illustrate the importance the NZ Girl Guides placed on outdoor recreation and training.

Current Use
Arahina Ministry and Function Centre (Arahina) was purchased from the New Zealand Girl Guide Association in the year 2000 by the Institute in Basic Life Principles (‘IBLP’ or ‘Institute’); a Christian, not-for-profit, non-sectarian training and community service organization.  It was used as a national training centre for the Institutes home education programme and as a national office for the Institute’s other ministries.
Today Arahina operates as a Ministry and Function Centre with education and training incorporated into Arahina’s wider ministry.  Arahina’s wider ministry includes Alternative Education for the Ministry of Education and residential services for Child Youth and Family referred youth.  Ministry also includes community service to local public schools, budget advice, work experience for those with disabilities, internships and counselling.  Functions include use of Arahina’s facilities for functions, meetings, accommodation and training.
The cache is a mini magnetic cache hidden at the entrance to the grounds. You do not need to enter the property to search for the cache. You will need to take a pencil to record your visit Parking : Park in Wellington Road at entrance to Arahina.
