Geocache Description:

This is one of five caches placed along the Lake Hayes Walkway.  The 7.27km circuit can be walked or cycled.  The track is graded easy and will take 2-3 hours.  There are toilets at Bendemeer Bay, North Lake Hayes Picnic Area and adjacent to the Waikatipu  Rowing Club below the Lake Hayes Showground Pavillion.  The well formed track provides outstanding views of the Lake and the surrounding mountains plus the opportunity to observe water birds including the NZ Scaup.

This cache can be accessed from either of the two entrances to the Lake Hayes Showground on the Gibbston Highway.  The road end by the rowing club is a popular swimming spot and a good place from which to observe Scaup.  The bird' brilliant diving skills set it apart from other NZ ducks.  it can dive two metres in search of its animal food and can stay under water for well over half a minute.

Your GPS will guide you to a spot where you can search in relative privacy.  Wandercat suggests with cache in hand you might like to sit overlooking the lake, apparently observing the birdlife before carefully returning the 200ml sistema container to the black bag and then to it's hiding place.
