Geocache Description:

BRADLEY WIGGENS

Bradley was born in Ghent, Belgium but grew up in London near to the Herne Hill Velodrome, where he started racing at the age of 12. Track was his main focus in his younger years and his first World Championship medal came as a junior in 1997 when he won the individual pursuit title in Cuba.

Three Olympic Gold medals and seven World Champion titles later Bradley switched his focus to road cycling and in 2009 he equalled the best-ever performance by a British rider in the Tour de France when he finished fourth overall. This result changed to third following the disqualification of Lance Armstrong.

In 2010, Bradley joined the British-backed Team Sky as the team leader and in their first season racing together he briefly took the Maglia Rosa in the Giro d’Italia after winning the opening time trial.

In the 2011 Tour de France, Wiggins crashed and broke his collarbone on stage seven forcing him to withdraw. Brad bounced back though, finishing third overall in the 2011 Vuelta a Espana and winning the silver medal in the time trial at the World Championships. He also played a crucial role in the team which helped Mark Cavendish to his historic victory in the road race.

The 2012 season will always be remembered as Bradley Wiggins’ year. He was on top form from the start, with wins in Paris-Nice, Tour of Romandie and the Critérium du Dauphiné.

After the disappointment of the previous year's Tour de France, Wiggins' began with a second place in the prologue and then took over the leader's yellow jersey after the race's first mountain top finish on stage 7 and retained it until Paris, thanks to the support of a strong Team Sky squad.

At the London Olympics, Wiggins dominated the road time trial in front of huge crowds. His gold medal in that event, his fourth gold and seventh Olympic medal in all, took him ahead of Steve Redgrave, the rower, at the top of the list of British medal winners at Olympic Games.

To top off a fantastic year for Bradley, he was named as BBC's Sports Personality of the Year 2012 and his achievements were recognised in the 2013 New Years Honours list in which he was awarded a Knighthood for his service to cycling.
