Geocache Description:

Welcome to "Southern: Thriving Through the Depression", a cache all about one aspect of Southern's almost forgotten history!

This is a very fun cache, but it is much more fun when you know the history of the area. Southern Junior College (now Southern Adventist University) had just come out of a regional depression when the Great Depression of 1929 hit. Circumstances got so bad that teachers’ salaries were cut by thirty percent, and during the 1932-33 school year Southern’s records showed less than 200 students enrolled.

The college did several things to change their dire situation; for starters, they reduced tuition by almost thirty percent. Second, college president H.J. Klooster started several campus industries including the Collegedale Hosiery Mill. By 1936, students were earning $29, 889 for their school bill. And in 1939, the Mill produced 624,000 pairs of silk stockings. Fifty-five students that year totally earned their way through school by working at the Hosiery Mill.

This cache will hopefully remind people of Southern’s history, and how the school truly thrived throughout the Depression. The actual cache is a small, golden pill bottle, with a logbook and not much room for anything else. Be sure to bring your own pencil or other writing device.
