On pilgrimage with Saint Ib
Who was St. Ib?
St. James the elderly lived by Genesereth lake. He was the son of Zebedee and brother of John, later saint and evangelist.
It is not known how the name “James/Jacob” has become Ib in danish, but the same saint is also called James, Jago, Jaques and Jakov depending on where in the world you are.
John and James/Jacob were fishermen and were chosen by Jesus to be among his disciples in the year of 27.
After Jesus died on the cross, the old Stories of Saints tell, that James/Jacob went to the north of Spain to spread the Christian message.
In the year of 43 he went back to the Holy Land, where the Christians were persecuted by King Herod Agrippa I. In the King's command James/Jacob was captured and executed by sword in the year of 44. Thus he became the first martyr among the apostles.
The old stories of saints tell that James/Jacob’s coffin was brought to Spain by his congregation there. Initially it was led to El Padron, but in 1120 transferred to the city of Santiago de Compostelas cathedral, where the bones were placed in a reliquary of silver.
There were many miracles at St. James's Tomb, and soon the city's cathedral became one of the most visited place of pilgrimage in medieval times, only surpassed by Jerusalem and Rome.
St. Ib's holy day is 25th of July, and his saintly character is the pilgrim stick, a hat, a begging bag and an “Ibsskal” - a large sea shell found on the beach at Santiago de Compostela. These shells were brought back by pilgrims as a sign that they had completed the pilgrimage.
And now for the cache!
Here, where the cache is located, one can study a little neglected fountain flowing down into an “Ibsskal”.
It is located in the area by Voergaard Castle, which in medieval times was owned by The Bishop in Børglum.
The castle and the area is now owned by a fund. One must go for a walk in the park, but if you like to take a look inside the castle, you are charged admission for the tour. Every year in week 29 there is Medieval Market at the castle. This week is charged admission!
The cache contains from start:
Logbook, pencil, indulgences, "Ibsskaller", "Troll Knot" (jewelry, which protects against witchcraft), small bags with pieces of amber and the TB: "The Pilgrim" which wants to hike.
