Geocache Description:

This is a series of multi-caches that I intend to place around the rural churches of North Monmouthshire. There are so many lovely churches around the area that are undervisited, so I hope to attract a few more visitors to these great spots. I shall start off with a few and hope to add to the series as I go along.

All of the caches start at the church where you need to find the answers to a couple of questions to allow you to find the final cache position, and none are intended to be particularly difficult (I would prefer you to find the caches) or are more than 1/2 a kilometre from the church. The above co-ords are for the parking too. This cache is best done in the daylight hours as there are a couple of houses that overlook the grounds which may give them cause for concern if they see torchs.

This cache is the sixth in the series and is based at St. James the Elder church in Llanvetherine. This attractive church had it's interior rebuilt in the 15th century and it's oak seating and pulpit added around 1900. The western tower is corbelled and has two bells. The church restoration was begun in 1866 and completed in 1872.

To find the whereabouts of the final cache location look for the answer to the questions below and replace the letters for the appropriate numbers in the co-ords at the bottom. So here we go.

Cross the road and before you even enter the church grounds look for the plaque on the gate in memory of Florence Mayo. How old was she when she died? AB

Now go through the gates and follow the path to the left of the building and on the end of the building you will see what looks like a gravestone attached to the building in memory of Dorothy the wife of Thomas Lewis (with the top section broken). She died the 26th day of July in 17CD.

So head round to the main porch and look to the top of the tower to see the weather vane in the shape of a hand (you will have to step back a bit to see). How many fingers (not thumbs) are pointing? E

Take a look inside the roof of the porch and you will see it decorated with a panelled effect. How many white panels are there? Divide your answer by 2. F

Opposite the porch entrance there is a rusty railing rectangle around a grave. How many Fleur de Lys spikes are there along the longer side? How many along the shorter side? Take the smaller number from the larger to get the value of G.

So replace your answers in this co-ord and off you go to get the cache! Final position N 51° 50.GB(D-E-C) W 002° 5B.(A-D)(F+E)D

The cache is a specimen pot in a camo bag (like most of the Monmouthshire Rural Churches caches) and isn't far away at all. When you find it please do not remove the bag or undo the string that is holding the bag - just open the bag to pop the cache out and when you've signed the log (there is a pencil there) just drop it back down to where you got it from to hide it - cheers.
