Geocache Description:

A simple cache to answer an often asked question.

Have you ever looked up on a clear day, from this part of Wirral, and wondered why there are so many aircraft vapour trails? Well, this cache will answer that question.

In order to stop aircraft flying into each other, they fly in virtual corridors and several of these intersect over Wirral. In order to navigate these virtual routes, aircraft use a variety of navigational aids and this cache is placed near one of them.
This is the Wallasey VOR (VHF omnidirectional radio range) beacon which is situated at the junction of several air routes. Developed in the US beginning in 1937 and deployed by 1946, VOR is the standard air navigational system in the world, used by both commercial and general aviation. There are about 3000 VOR stations around the world.

Next time you look up on a clear day; notice how many of the trails appear to turn as they pass overhead. These aircraft are using the Wallasey VOR as a marker for a virtual road junction in the sky.

The cache is a small click box hidden in a hedge about 1 meter above the ground. It is not located on the beacon itself for several reasons including potential interference to GPS readings and security.

If you look at a map you will see that there is vehicular access to the site. This is a private road and should not be used to find the cache. In fact you will get your feet wet if you try to approach from this direction. A parking waypoint has been provided and access by foot is easy.
