A trail-friendly hide placed just a few feet beyond the north edge of the Portage Pond Loop section of the Trail of Blue Ice, in a spruce tree. This cache lies on the north side of Portage Highway and closest parking is in the Salmon Viewing Area lot.

Photo by Walter Siegmund (from Wikipedia) of an Arctic White Butterfly (Pieris Angelika) taken in Chugach State Park

When we hike with our young grandsons Noah and Corbin, we make a game out of counting wildlife and kinds of flowers we observe. Both of them love to watch butterflies and bees, and many a hike has been brought to an abrupt halt to watch little flitters at work. On a gorgeous day in June hiking the Portage Pond Loop of the Trail of Blue Ice in Portage Valley we counted three dozen of the Arctic White Butterflies on our journey. When I asked Noah and Corbin what we should name this cache, the butterflies were topmost on their mind! The Arctic White butterfly is one of Alaska's most common butterfly species, and is easy to see against the green foliage of summer.

Use forest-friendly 'lift-look-replace' methods when searching, and don't trample standing vegetation around the hide site. Please don't overtighten the black Mini-Bison's lid. This cache is intended to be easy to find, yet hidden from the casual passerby. Enjoy your time along the Trail of Blue Ice!
