Geocache Description:

A cache near a small piece of the old Hume Highway. An opportunity to break your drive on the Hume and reflect on the improvements since the 'old days'.

Chiltern was the first town to be by-passed on the Hume Highway, in 1961. A look down the village's main street shows why it was first - it's hard to see how 2 big trucks could pass each other with cars parked on both sides.

This cache is located close to where the old highway (Sydney-bound) left the present-day alignment of the Freeway and crossed the Sydney railway at a level crossing and headed in to Chiltern, along what is now Wenkes Road. There are still some stretches of old bitumen to be seen......

Best place to park for this is either at the old cemetery between the railway and freeway, or on Wenkes Rd just through the ford.

Be careful in the dark as there are a couple of big drop-offs close to the cache.

The cache is a polypipe container with logbook, pencil, a few coins and plenty of room for trackables.

Make sure you collect 'Martin and Clara' at the old cemetery while you're here. And maybe head in to Chiltern for coffee and pastries at the bakery!

Well done FTF - kiara001!
