Geocache Description:

FOUNDER'S BROOK
Off Old Boyd's Lane in Portsmouth

Founder's Brook is dedicated to the memory of Anne Marrbury Hutchinson.

Born in England in 1591, Anne Marbury married William Hutchinson and the migrated to America in the 1600's.
She was a religious liberal, leading Bible lessons in her home againist the wishes of the local clergy and
town leaders. Her ideas were controversial and she was banished out of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
She and her husband traveled south and helped to found Aquidneck Island.  Building their home in Portsmouth.

Mary Barrett Dyer, a friend of Anne's in Boston, was also banished from Massachusetts for the same reasons and
followed the Hutchinson's with her hsband William.  They settled in Portsmouth.  But Mary was restless and walked
back to Boston. Where she was promptly arrested, jailed and put to death by hanging on June 1, 1660.  Not for being a
Quaker, but for her disobeying the banishment order.

Both these strong, independent women are examples of the spirit and strength it took to live and make a difference
in the early years of our great nation.

Walk along the brook to the back of the park, enjoying the babbling brook and beautiful birdsong along the way.
There is a memorial herb garden dedicated to the memory of both Anne Marbury Hutchinson and Mary Barrett Dyer.

To the left of the garden is a large boulder with a plaque listing the signers of the "Portsmouth Contract"
Follow the stepping stones around the memorial and you will find what you seek. Bring bug spray in season! You have been warned ! FTF kudos to Plaidsheets!
